In the article “Segway
Creator Unveils His Next Act”, Eric Shonfeld highlights the two innovations
invented by Dean Kamen. He concerned about a huge problem in the developing
countries including the shortage of water and electricity. For that reason, he
created two machines to fight this issue. His first invention was the power
generator. It runs on animal waste to work; in addition, it has a power that is
about 1 kilowatt. Kamen’s next invention was the water-cleaning machine which
he called, the Slingshot. He created it with care to make it very simple to
use. The slingshot works by putting any dirty water inside and vaporizing it
into steam; then, ditching the dirt. Kamen wanted to demonstrate his ideas into
the real world; for that reason, he joined forces with the biggest cell phone
company in Bangladesh in order to create 3 entrepreneurs: one to collect cow
dung as an energy source, another one to sell out lightbulbs, and the last one
to share the electricity among the villagers.
Dean Kamen
mentioned a point about the value of one kilowatt. He believes that if this
amount of electricity is used wisely, villagers can work at night. This is
important, because by using a specific technique we can consume more value of
the electricity we have. For a better future, people should carefully use the
sources they control to maintain greater effect.
